Pastizzi Café – Newtown, Sydney, NSW

I give the Pastizzi Café in Newtown 7 of the flakiest stuffed pastry portions out of 10.

Before leaving Newtown after some doughnuts, and gelato, I wanted to quickly show my sister the Pastizzi Café. A place a good friend introduced me to a few years ago.

I was there to show her one thing, the Pastizzi. They have a whole menu of Maltese-Italian fusion food which looks really tasty. But the thing we go there for is the Pastizzi. I hope this doesn’t expose me as a “Food Blogger” fraud as I only go there for one side of what they do. You know what, honestly, I am a fraud. But that’s another story.

Anyway, where was I… The Pastizzi Café have fantastic Pastizzi. Have I mentioned Pastizzi enough yet?!

I should take the time to go there for a sit down meal soon and see what their dishes are like. But for now let me tell you about what I go there for.

The Pastizzi. These are little flaky parcels of goodness. With many different flavours so there’s sure to be one for you. You can purchase them fresh, warmed up to be eaten immediately or cool to be warmed up at home. Or you can even purchase a whole frozen, uncooked, bag full to eat at your leisure later.

As an intro to the world of Pastizzi for my sister we decided to try 4 different ones and went for:

  • Spinach and Ricotta
  • Chicken and Mushroom
  • Beef and Dark Ale
  • Chocolate and Ricotta

Firstly, I wish we bought more. We took them home and cut them up to share, but also to give some of the family a taste too. Did I mention we should have bought more?!

I guess this was just an introductory tasting… but still, we should have bought more.

A selection of Pastizzi

For me the standouts were the Chicken and Mushroom, and the Beef and Dark Ale. The ingredients tasted quality, and the sauces and flavour mixes were just on point.

The Chocolate and Ricotta I chose out of interest, and although I can see how it would be tasty to others, just isn’t my thing. I didn’t hate it though, it still tasted good, it’s just not for me.

I’ll continue to visit the Pastizzi Café and try all their different flavours, although by now I think I have probably tried most. As mentioned earlier I’ll also be back to try their meals. A visit here is recommended.
